Mary-Lou Divilli is our amazing Gallery & Marketing Assistant who moved to Kununurra last year from Derby way. She identifies as Nyikina and Ngarinyin skin, both from her mother’s side and gained experience as an arts worker and artist (photography, painting, printmaking) at Mowanjum Arts.

Her main motivation for creating art is to learn about her culture and explore and represent her identity. She is inspired by the older people and their depth of cultural knowledge expressed through stories and traditional song.

Mary-Lou’s photography will be presented at “The Alternative Archive” Exhibition. Her work explores how traditional culture can be re-interpreted through new technology and multimedia techniques.

Through experiments with studio lighting to create dramatic effect, Mary-Lou seeks to convey the dichotomy of ‘the artist’:

“I am showing both the soft and human side of our senior artists and I am also showing the strong side of the artists through the power of their work. My pieces capture a moment of their knowledge and I tell their story in my own way.”

The Alternative Archive will be held in the Dawang Gallery at Waringarri Arts, Opening Night - Sun 23rd June 4.30pm. Followed by a musical celebration Tura New Music - The Sonus Tour - Kununurra and traditional performance by Waringarri Dancers. Free event. No alcohol. BYO chair.
