The Rise and Rise of Kira Kiro Kalumburu
The artists from Kira Kiro art centre have recently been creating quite a buzz, the recent high quality, vibrant and refreshingly new artworks being produced have collectors very excited.

Kira Kiro art centre in Kalumburu was established in 2009 and operates with ongoing assistance from Waringarri Aboriginal Arts. The centre represents 28 artists from Kalumburu, situated on the banks of the King Edward River in Western Australia. The centre’s name comes from the Kira Kiro figures depicted in the rock art of the region. They are important figures in the law of the Kalumburu region.
The art centre places an emphasis on supporting traditional skills such as bark harvesting, natural fibreweaving and storytelling. Many of the artists are also influenced by the region’s rich rock art. Artists tend to paint with ochre pigments and are skilled slate and boab engravers. Artists include: Mary Punchi Clement , Mercy Fredericks, Gwen Clarke, Lily Karadada, Betty Bundamara and Mary Teresa Tailor.

In collaboration with Tali Gallery and Waringarri Aboriginal Arts, senior Kira Kiro female artist Mary Punchi Clement was recently commissioned to paint two large scale paintings for the lecture theatre of a prestigious Canberra school.
